Living in Luleå
There are about 76,000 inhabitants in Luleå municipality. The number of inhabitants is increasing with about 500 persons per year.
The commercial and industrial life has a wide base, for example steel and engineering industry, many IT-companies and commerce. Luleå University of Technology has about 19,000 students. The University provides education in the spheres of engineering, social sciences, teaching, health sciences, theatre etc.
The new arts and conference centre (Kulturens Hus) contains a large public library, an art centre, concert halls etc. The cultural life of Luleå is enriched by the Norrbotten Theatre (Norrbottensteatern), the Norrbotten Museum (Norrbottens Museum), Hägnan Rural Heritage Park (Friluftsmuseet Hägnan), independent theatre groups and many choirs.
The City of Luleå also offers its inhabitants and visitors great possibilities for an active leisure time. Within the municipality you will find several public baths, sports auditoriums and gymnasiums, athletic fields, motor sports facilities, riding centres, cross-country skiing and running tracks, shooting ranges and much more.
In the summer months the coastline of Norrbotten is one of Sweden’s sunniest places. Luleå also has a beautiful archipelago with more than 1,300 islands and islets. Several surveys have shown Luleå to be one of the cheaper municipalities in Sweden to live in, with a high level of council services.
