Frequently asked questions
What to consider when camping in the archipelago
Make sure to research your destination before you go. Check maps, ask us at Luleå Tourist Center for tips, and study the weather forecast. It’s not much fun camping in heavy rain and strong winds. Winds are usually stronger than on the mainland, and just like in the mountains, the weather can change quickly.
How to know where camping is allowed
The Right of Public Access (allemansrätten) applies, meaning you can camp for one night pretty much anywhere. According to the law: “You can camp for a single night in nature. Be mindful not to disturb the landowner or damage nature. Choose durable ground for your tent and avoid pastures, farmland, or plantations. Tent sites should not be close to houses.” Common sense applies here*.
Choosing a campsite
Pick a spot where you won’t be disturbed and won’t disturb others. Avoid spreading out too much and “privatizing” an area.
Hygiene and toilet needs
If you’re camping on islands with facilities provided by Luleå Municipality, we recommend using our dry toilets. If the island has a public sauna, you can book a time to wash there. On other islands, you’ll need to wash in the sea.
Recommended spots for beginner campers
Kluntarna is a great choice. There’s a nice campsite at the back of Storviken with access to a grill area and dry toilets.
What to bring on your camping trip:
- Drinking water: Most islands don’t have fresh water available.
- Food and extra supplies: If you miss the tour boat, it may be a day before the next one arrives.
- Proper tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag and change of clothes.
- Cooking equipment: A spirit stove or gas stove is ideal. Grilling is possible at designated areas, but it’s hard to make coffee without cooking pots.
- Knife, axe and matches: For making a fire.
- Flashlight: Useful when evenings get darker.
- Power Bank: To charge your phone, as most islands lack electricity.
Additional tips for your camping trip
Double-check the tour boat timetable and book your ticket in advance to avoid missing your trip! Consider kayaking or booking a boat taxi to reach a larger selection of islands in our archipelago.
* Please note: Some islands are not suitable for camping, and due to sensitive birdlife, landings are prohibited from May 1 to July 31. These islands are marked on nautical charts. Islands served by tour boats are not affected by these restrictions. Also, it is not allowed to be in the southern and eastern parts of Junkön, as it is a military shooting range.
Optional service fee for campers
Camping in the archipelago is free. If you on the other hand would like to have access to firewood, the outhouses, recycling station, sauna or other facilities provided by the municipality, we appreciate if you pay a optional service fee. This fee helps us maintain the good service and at the same time you support the development of the Luleå archipelago. Thank you for your contribution!
